The odds of getting into a car accident, on average, for an American driver during their lifetime are 1 in 366, according to the Insurance Information Institute. So why do we drive knowing this? Maybe it's out of necessity and the benefits it provides us, but I also think it is safe to say we trust our own driving skills.
So what does this have to do with exercise?
We know the benefits of strength training as well, and the list is massive
Increased muscle strength and mass
Increased bone density
Reduced risk for chronic disease
Improved metabolism
Reduced stress and anxiety
Improved cognitive function
Improved sleep quality
Just about every system in the body can benefit
And yet, for some people, lifting is a scary endeavor. Either because of a previous lifting injury, or you know someone who hurt themselves lifting weights you avoid them. In reality though, according to a study of weightlifters in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the injury incidence in weightlifting was 2.4–3.3 injuries/1000 hours of training.
This then begs the question, if you had a magic pill to improve all these conditions and the only negative side effects were some soreness and a very low chance of injury would you take it? Perhaps going back to the car accident analogy, it might for you just be a matter of confidence. You know the benefits and positives it provides, you are just afraid of how well you can do it and whether your body can handle it.
You practiced driving as a teenager before you got your license, and before you lift heavy you will need some practice too. Start small and load progressively. Spend quality time working on form and technique. Don’t jump onto the freeway going 90, and stay in your lane. Find a coach that can show you the ropes. And of course, if you need some help and guidance we would love to help you in your fitness journey.
