The Mid-Recovery Slump

Just like a baseball player can go through a hitting slump on occasions, we can go through a slump while recovering from injuries or going through the rehab process.

A good example is Bryce Harper. This season started with him only hitting 3 home runs through 47 games, which for him is WELL below normal.

What some people may not know is that he had Tommy John surgery on his elbow and came back in 160 days, whereas the norm for most players to get back to playing is actually 12-18 months. Too soon? Maybe. But who’s going to tell Bryce Harper that.

He was also still hitting above 0.300. So he knew that things would eventually start to click with his power but that it would take some time to get back to 100%. Now, he’s crushing the baseball and almost single-handedly knocked my Braves out of the playoffs.🙄

The point is that there was a phase that he had to go through a “slump” during his rehab process before his body would bounce back.

When we get injured or are rehabbing an injury, it can sometimes feel like it’s not getting better. Usually this happens in the phase of healing that just past “sub-acute” and before the 8 weeks or so it takes to make true strength gains.

The middle stages of recovery can feel like you’re not improving, but you have to stick to the process and double down, knowing that the key to success is just to never give up.

I’ll end with one of my favorite quotes.

“Success is achieved by ordinary people with extraordinary determination.” -Zig Ziglar
