Strength and Conditioning

Even for the Kids

There is a big misconception that PT is only for injuries and pain, but we are movement experts and have a lot of experience and training in strength and conditioning. Perhaps you are wanting to improve power production with lifting, or increase leg turnover and speed to get faster in 5Ks. Maybe your kids need some help with fine tuning movements and improving skill and safety in the gym, or improve in their sport. There are many ways we can help you achieve your goals.

What might need to be addressed?

Mobility

Limitations in joint mobility or flexibility can impair performance. Problems with hip rotation will limit squat depth, limitations in hip extension affects stride and glute activation, thoracic tightness can affect overhead mobility for swimming. You don't need to be able to do the splits, but problems in one area show up in each rep we perform of an activity.

Strength

The body will find ways to complete a task. This is particularly noticeable with lifting. How many times have you performed some lift at the gym or even in your yard and your back hurts or you think to yourself how did that get sore. Chances are something is weak: shoulders, lower back, glutes, quads, calves, somewhere in the chain. Force production then gets transferred somewhere else and one area gets overloaded.

Power

This is defined as force x velocity and is usually thought of with big movements and plyometric style exercise. Power production comes from getting muscles working together in patterns and firing fast and strong. This shows up in racing, climbing hills, playing sports and separates good from great. And often times a piece of training that is neglected.

Control

Balance and stability are crucial to injury prevention as athletes, recreational hobbyists and as we become older adults. Your ability to control your body in space (proprioception) determines foot placement with running, knee and hip control with landing and jumping, ability to reach out and catch, and perform at high levels. This is a learned skill that improves with practice, training, and exposure to challenge.
